Blue Raider rally comes up short against Charlotte

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – In the first home conference series of the season, Middle Tennessee's rally came up just short in the rubber match against Charlotte, losing 7-5 in Reese Smith Jr. Field on Sunday.
"I thought their starter did a great job, he stayed down in the zone and kept us off balance," said head coach Jim McGuire "I just didn't like our approach at the plate, we allowed him to have the success that he had."
The Blue Raiders struggled at the plate, going five innings before they got their first hit. Myles Christian broke up the no-hitter with a leadoff double in the left field gap to start the sixth inning.
LA Woodard scored Christian with a ground out to short stop to score the first run for MT.
However, the Blue Raiders displayed their resolve in the eighth inning when they strung together four consecutive two-out hits and two walks, tallying four runs and closing the gap to only two.
"Our biggest adjustment (in the eighth) was trying to see a couple more pitches," said third basemen Drew Huff. "We started to figure him out, but it was a little too late."
MT had the game-winning run on first base, but could not push him across as the 49ers were able to retire freshman catcher Jake Hagenow.
Freshman left-handed pitcher Peyton Wigginton got the start on the mound for Middle Tennessee. Wigginton lasted 4-2/3 innings, allowing four earned runs on seven hits.
Two-way players Drew Huff and Austin Dennis pitched well in relief of Wigginton, tossing a combined 2-2/3 scoreless innings, and striking out four batters while only surrendering three hits.
The Blue Raiders have a chance to bounce back in a midweek matchup against the Belmont Bruins. First pitch on Tuesday is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. Carter Bair is slated to make his first start of the season.
