Raiders Slide By Belmont, 7-2

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Middle Tennessee softball team blew past Belmont 7-2 on Tuesday evening at the always windy E.S. Rose Park in Nashville. Kristin Uselton and Kirstyn Cuccia had two RBI apiece while Claire Smith went 3-for-3 with three runs scored.
Middle improves to 26-15 on the year following the victory while Belmont drops to 21-12.
Cori Jennings earned the complete game win in the circle and is now 13-7 on the season. She pitched six shutout innings allowing just two hits prior to the seventh inning. She struck out two on the day to bring her yearly total up to 71.
The Blue Raiders struck first in the game, taking a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Claire Smith got the action started with a two out single down the right field line. After stealing second, Smith scored as Kristin Uselton put the ball in play and the Bruins made an error.
Two more Belmont errors in the third inning put another run on MT's side of the scoreboard. Precious Birdsong had a two out single to right field. She followed that up by stealing second and advancing to third on a throwing error by the catcher. Jocelynn De La Cruz then sent a pitch to third base and that ball was also overthrown to bring Birdsong across and put Middle up 2-0.
The Raiders followed with another run in the fourth frame. Smith got aboard on a one out single to the shortstop. She was moved to second base on a bunt single from Uselton. Smith then scored as Kirstyn Cuccia smacked a single up the middle. Up 3-0, MT was able to load the bases as Keely McGee followed with a single to centerfield but two straight outs kept the Raiders from adding to their lead.
Two big doubles added three more runs for MT in the top of the fifth inning. Lexi Cushing got aboard on a single to left field and Smith followed with a walk. Then Uselton sent her sixth double of the season deep down the left field line to give the Raiders a 5-0 lead. Kirstyn Cuccia added another run as she followed with a double to right center field to score Uselton.
MT took a 7-0 lead in the sixth frame as Summer Burgess and Birdsong got aboard on back-to-back leadoff walks. After a wild pitch, Burgess scored as Morgan Harris grounded out to second base.
Belmont made a comeback in the bottom of the seventh stringing together three hits to score two runs. Sami Long was credited with the two RBI for the Bruins as she sent a two out single to left center field. A ground out back to Jennings in the circle put Belmont to rest for the final time though to secure the Raider victory.

The Blue Raiders return to action tomorrow as they travel to play Ausin Peay in Clarksville. First pitch is set for 4pm.
