Blue Raiders fall to Tennessee Tech
4/11/2018 10:00:00 PM | Baseball
MURFREESBORO, Tenn – Coming off the dominant win over Belmont, Middle Tennessee dropped its game against Tennessee Tech in Cookeville 14-2 in Bush Stadium on Wednesday.
"You're going to get both sides of it." Said head coach Jim McGuire. "Last night we were cruising along and feeling good and then it flipped on us tonight."
The Golden Eagles plated three runs off MT starter Carter Bair in the first inning and never looked back. Bair lasted two innings, giving up seven earned runs and striking out two of 13 batters faced.
Tennessee Tech added eight runs in the third inning to blow the game open, taking control of things 11-0.
The Blue Raiders showed life in the fourth inning; after Blake Benefield tripled to the right field gap, freshman catcher Jake Hagenow singled him home. Hagenow scored MT's only other run in the seventh on a wild pitch.
Fellow freshman Myles Christian led MT at the plate as the only Blue Raider to record multiple hits, going 2-of-3 with two singles.
In his two innings of relief, Peyton Wigginton was dominant on the mound. Wigginton tossed two hitless innings, retiring six-of-seven batters faced.
"It was very encouraging. Peyton pitched like he did in the fall and at the beginning of the season." Said McGuire.
Austin Dennis' 15-game hitting streak came to an end tonight. Along with Dennis, Aaron Aucker's 11-game hit streak was also snapped..
MT aims to bounce back in a crucial home conference series against Rice this weekend. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. in Reese Smith Jr. Field on Friday, but the time is subject to change with impending weather on the forecast.
