Longest postseason run for MT since joining C-USA
5-seed MT vs. 1-seed FIU results
Season Stats
NORFOLK, Va.– Middle Tennessee's women's tennis team made history yesterday for advancing to the semifinals of the Conference USA Championship for the first time, but on Saturday, No. 37 FIU took a win.
Costanza Magazzini and Maria Josefina Zehnder were leading in their match at No. 3, 5-3, when the match was halted. The Panthers clinched the doubles point with 6-2 wins on both courts one and two.
Top-seed FIU took a 2-0 lead with the help of No. 9-ranked Andrea Lazaro at the top spot in the lineup, 6-1, 6-1. The Panthers then won at No. 4, 5 and 6 to finish off the 5-0 win. FIU advances to the C-USA Finals, where they'll meet 2-seed No. 43 Rice tomorrow morning.
MT wrapped up its season with a record of 19-8, the best season in the Charlie Ramsay era and tied with the 2015 Blue Raiders for the best record since 2000. This season will always be a highlight in the Blue Raider women's tennis record book, as this was the first time MT advanced to the C-USA Semifinals.
Kim Kermet led the way for the Blue Raiders this spring with a 14-8 record, mostly at the No. 3 spot in the lineup. Lidia Burrows followed closely behind at 13-9. MT was stellar at No. 6 (20-6) behind Luisa Zirilli, Lee Barnard and Zani Barnard taking turns at the bottom of the lineup, all with 11 wins each this spring. In her final dual match season as a Blue Raider, Zehnder posted a 10-10 record, including a perfect 5-0 mark at No. 2.
