KANNAPOLIS, NC – After a lengthy break, the Middle Tennessee men's golf team will step back into action this weekend at the Cabarrus County Irish Creek Intercollegiate. The 54-hole event will take place at The Club at Irish Creek which is a par 71 course that will play to a yardage of 7,099.
The field will play 36 holes on Saturday and the final 18 on Sunday. Shotgun start both days will begin at 8:30 AM ET.
The Blue Raiders, ranked 64th nationally by GolfStat, last played March 18-20 at the Linger Longer Invitational. The Irish Creek begins a key stretch drive that will see MT play the following week at the nearby Mason Rudolph Championship before preparing for the Conference USA Championship and postseason play.
The 15-team field at Irish Creek consists of Akron, Charlotte, Clemson, Dartmouth, Davidson, Dayton, Georgia Tech, Indiana, James Madison, Kansas, Middle Tennessee, UNC Greensboro, North Florida, West Virginia and VCU. Clemson, Georgia Tech are both ranked in the top 15 nationally, while North Florida is 29th and Kansas is No. 35.
Head Coach Brennan Webb will put Tyler Johnson, Marcus Byrd, Chip Thomas, James Beckner and Ilari Saulo into the lineup with Hoyeong Kim playing as an individual. Due to an injury suffered Monday, sophomore Tanner Owens will not be able to make the trip.
"We have had a really good stretch of practice the last couple of weeks and I know the guys are confident heading into a big stretch for us," added Webb. "It's a good field in Charlotte and another good chance for us to test ourselves against some of the top teams in the country."
Johnson leads the team with a 71.5 scoring average and has two top 15 finishes in his last two events, while Byrd is second with a 71.9 stroke average. Byrd finished 10th in his last time out. Thomas owns a 72.3 average and Beckner has a 73.3.
