MURFREESBORO, Tenn.– Middle Tennessee's men's tennis team found itself in the national rankings this week for the second time this season, as the No. 45 Blue Raiders are set to host VCU and William & Mary this weekend.
MT senior Gian Issa is one singles win away from being tied for seventh all-time in wins in program history and has a 17-2 mark this spring. Freshman Chris Edge is already in the top 10 in program history among freshman singles and doubles wins, and he's second on the team with a 14-6 record. In doubles, the Blue Raiders are solid as a team at all three positions, posting a 35-11 mark.
The Blue Raiders open with VCU on Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Adams Tennis Complex, and there will be free food sponsored by The Boulevard. The Rams are 11-7 overall but only 2-3 away from their home courts this season. VCU and MT both won over Rice and George Washington, and the third common opponent between the two teams is Wichita State. MT won over the Shockers, 5-2, but VCU dropped their match against Wichita State, 4-0. VCU is 19-20 as a team in doubles and only has a losing record as a team in singles at No. 1.
William & Mary is the final opponent for the Blue Raiders this weekend, with action getting underway on Sunday at 11 a.m. with a grill out and corn hole available at the ATC. The 10-7 Tribe have also not found success away from home, as they bring a 2-5 record in true road matches to Murfreesboro. The Tribe starts singles down a point most of the time, as they are 19-25 as a team in doubles. Freshman Sebastian Quiros leads the team in dual match singles wins at 11-4, all at the No. 5 and 6 spots.
