Cheruiyot, Egbeniyi Ink First Place Finishes at C-USA Outdoor Championship Prelims

HOUSTON, Texas – After the third day of the Conference USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, 13 Blue Raiders qualified for finals on Sunday in their respective events.
Geoffry Cheruiyot inked the first Blue Raider top finish of the afternoon, claiming a first place time of 3:56.26 in the men's 1,500-meter to qualify for the finals tomorrow evening. Abike Egbeniyi also inked a first place finish in the women's 800-meter event to qualify for the finals.
Similarly, Joice Jebor notched a career-best time in the women's 1,500-meter event with a time of 4:36.95 to finish fourth to qualify for the event finals. Meanwhile, Lauren Epps also qualified for the finals in the 100-meter hurdles inking a seventh place finish (14.39).
Likewise, two Blue Raiders qualified for the finals action in the men's 400-meter run. Adeniji Adedamola inked a seventh place finish to earn his spot while Jaquez Torian finished eighth to qualify for the 400-meter tomorrow. On the women's side Joycelyn Assafuah punched her ticket finals in the 400-meter inking a second place finish with a time of 54.18. Simiarly, Loveth Odia also earned her spot in the finals in the 400-meter run crossing the line at 55.37.
In the men's 100-meter dash, Solomon Afful inked a fifth place finish (10.43) while Lamarco Petty finished eighth (10.52) to both qualify for the finals tomorrow. Meanwhile, Edidiong Odiong finished second (11.60), while Cecilia Francis finished fifth (11.65) and Mirlege Castor inked a seventh place finish (11.71).
Lamarco Petty inked a seventh place finish in the men's 200-meter dash (21.07) to qualify for finals action tomorrow. Meanwhile, Odiong clinched a third place finish (23.50) in the women's 200-meter to qualify for the finals.
In the women's long jump, Qetuwrah Abdullah Muhammad inked a third place finish with a career-best distance of 6.16-meters while Omolayo Omosola finished ninth (5.81m).
Cheruiyot rounded off the day in the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase clinching a fourth place finish (9:09.55) while Racheal Kosgei inked a third place finish and Rachel Kigen finished six in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase.
Overall the men sit in ninth place overall in the championships with five points while the women's team ranks fourth with 32 points.
