RALEIGH, NC – Middle Tennessee came up just two shots short of advancing to its second NCAA Championship on Wednesday after firing a school NCAA Regional record round of 275 (9-under par). It was the third-best round of the day and matched the eighth-best round in MT history.
The Blue Raiders, who led the field with 69 birdies, finished with an 836 total which went down as the best 54-hole score in the program's NCAA history. It also matched the third-best 54-hole total in MT history.
Middle Tennessee made a late charge with nine birdies over its final four holes but it wasn't enough.
"We came up a couple shots short but it's hard to explain how proud I am of these guys," said Head Coach Brennan Webb. "They have proven that there is no stage too big for them and shooting nine-under par on the most pressure packed day is a big statement."
The low five teams advancing to the NCAA National Championships from the Raleigh Regional are Texas, Duke, host NC State, Augusta and Arizona State.
Junior Marcus Byrd went into a sudden death playoff with Campbell's Pontus Nyholm and Missouri's Hayden Buckley to see who would grab the individual spot at the national championship. All three players birdied the first hole and all three made par on the second (No. 8). However, Nyholm managed a birdie on the third hole (No. 9) to grab the spot to Stillwater.
Tyler Johnson and Byrd both carded 4-under par rounds of 67 to lead the Raiders on the final day. Johnson, who had seven birdies, tied for 16th overall while Byrd tied for fifth.
Byrd's 54-hole total of 204 went down as the second-best of his career and ranks as the fifth lowest in school history. The junior had 18 birdies on the week to rank second in the field, while his 7-under par total on the par 5s ranked fourth.
James Beckner had another solid day with a 1-under par 70 to tie for 21st. Beckner had four birdies on the day, including two over his last four holes.
Chip Thomas shot his third straight even par 71 and tied for 40th. Thomas had five birdies on the day and finished with 15 for the week.
Hoyeong Kim had a 76 and finished in 68th place. Kim had three birdies in what was his final collegiate round.
