Middle Tennessee edged by Charleston Southern in three sets

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – The Middle Tennessee volleyball team dropped its first contest of the Catamount Volleyball Classic to Charleston Southern in three sets this evening.
Senior Bailey Mason and freshman Julia Valdez paced the Blue Raider offense, registering six kills apiece. Likewise, freshman Samira Lawson Body added five kills in her first collegiate outing for Middle Tennessee.
From their setter position, freshman Sarah Sumida (21 assists) and junior Taylor Hammill (8 assists) combined for 29 assists and seven digs.
In the middle, redshirt-senior Vonnie Covington chipped in with four kills as junior Dora Peonia added another four from the outside while hitting on a .429 clip.
In the first set, Charleston Southern took control of the set early, opening on a 3-0 run. Middle Tennessee battled back creating a run (5-2) of its own with kills from Mason, Valdez and Coughlin to tie the set at five. The teams continued to battle back and forth, creating five lead changes before tying at 20. Freshman Samira Lawson Body helped the team regain the lead over the Buccaneers, inking an ace (21-20). However, Charleston Southern created a 5-0 run to close out the first set, 25-22.
The Blue Raiders were unable to regain their momentum, falling in the second set (25-14) and the third set (25-19) to close the match.
Middle Tennessee will return to the Ramsey Center tomorrow to round off the Catamount Volleyball Classic with a doubleheader. The squad will face Robert Morris at 9 a.m. before finishing the weekend against tournament host, Western Carolina at 5:30 p.m.
