Volleyball Edged by LA Tech in Four Sets, 3-1

RUSTON, La. – The Middle Tennessee volleyball team dropped the first two sets and built a lead in the third but couldn't hold on in a 3-1 setback to LA Tech on Sunday afternoon in the Thomas Assembly Center.
The Blue Raiders (4-10, 0-2) were edged by the Lady Techsters (5-10, 1-1) in the first frame (25-19) and the second (25-22) before the team battled back in the third in extra points (26-24) to trail LA Tech by one. From there, Middle Tennessee built a four-point edge in the fourth before LA Tech stormed back to win the fourth (25-21).
Senior Bailey mason got off to a fast start with five first-set kills en route to recording her second double-double of the season with 12 digs and 11 kills. Joining Mason on the outside, redshirt-sophomore Aubrie Huddleston recorded a season and team-best 14 kills on 24 attempts.
Junior Dora Peonia and senior Regan Coughlin added eight kills apiece as Coughlin added 15 digs and Peonia tallied a block.
From the backrow, freshman Samira Lawson Body inked 10 digs in the contest as LA Tech earned a 61-52 edge in digs. Meanwhile, the Lady Techsters hit .200 on the day as the Blue Raiders hit .179.
Junior setter Taylor Hammill (23) and freshman setter Sarah Sumida (22) orchestrated the Middle Tennessee attack, inking a combined 45 assists in the four-set contest.
Rounding out the Blue Raider attack, sophomore Josie Maxim recorded seven kills as freshman duo Julia Valdez (two) and Samira Lawson Body (two) combined for four.
The Lady Techsters took off early hitting .280 while building a 21-15 advantage. However, back-to-back LA Tech errors helped spark a 3-0 Blue Raider run. However, the Lady Techsters bounced back to take the first set over the Blue Raiders, 25-19.
In the second frame, the Blue Raiders opened the set with a 2-1 advantage over LA Tech, but the Lady Techsters took the lead with a 3-0 run and never trailed the rest of the way winning the set, 25-22.
After the intermission, the teams split the first eight points before a service ace from Mason anchored a 3-0 run over the Lady Techsters as the Blue Raiders took a 16-13 advantage. LA Tech battled back near the end of the set to tie the frame at 22-all before the Blue Raiders claimed the set-in extra points, 26-24.
In the fourth and final set, the Lady Techsters built an early lead over the Blue Raiders and Middle Tennessee was able to get within three before LA Tech took the set over the Blue Raiders, 25-21.
Middle Tennessee is back in action next weekend when it returns home to the Alumni Memorial Gym to take on Southern Mississippi on Sunday, Sept. 30.
