Knock off UTEP, 79-49
EL PASO, Texas – Middle Tennessee demonstrated its patented team defense and outstanding offensive execution to turn back UTEP, 79-49, and win its sixth straight here Saturday.
The Lady Raiders (15-4, 6-0) maintained their half-game lead atop the C-USA standings with its solid play and improved to 4-0 in conference road games.
With the triumph, Lady Raider Head Coach Rick Insell tied former men's basketball coach Kermit Davis as the all-time winningest basketball coach in Middle Tennessee history with 332 victories.
A'Queen Hayes led Middle Tennessee as she supplied her fifth double-double. Hayes poured in 18 points and yanked down 13 rebounds. Alexis Whittington continued to show her development with a career-high 13 points on the strength of three 3-pointers, also a high-water mark for the freshman from Murfreesboro. Another freshman, Taylor Sutton, rounded out the double-figure scoring with 10 points to go with five assists and two steals.
All 14 players saw action and 11 of them scored. Alex Johnson tallied seven points and pulled seven rebounds. Kyla Allison and Katie Collier followed with six each and Jadona Davis tallied five.
"I am pretty much pleased all-around today," Insell said. "I didn't really care what the score was, I just wanted to see our players do their jobs when they were in the game. For the most part they all did. Overall, I thought our defense was pretty solid."
Middle Tennessee's defense was downright stifling. The Lady Raiders entered the game 16th nationally in scoring defense, allowing 55.2 points per game. They put on a clinic against UTEP. It marked the sixth time Middle Tennessee has held an opponent below 50 points.
The Lady Raiders held UTEP to four points in the second quarter, outscoring them 20-4 in the frame to roll to a 50-17 halftime lead. Middle Tennessee's defense allowed just five field goals in the first half as it stymied the host team.
While the defense was outstanding, the offense was equally dominant, particularly in the opening 20 minutes when the Lady Raiders shot a sizzling 67 percent (20-of-30) from the field, including a smoldering 64 percent from 3-point range (7-of-11). Five different Lady Raiders connected from long range during that stretch with Whittington (2), Hayes (2), Sutton (1), Jess Louro (1) and Katie Collier (1) all getting into the act.
"There were a couple of keys to that first-half offense," Insell said. "The young ladies did an outstanding job moving the basketball and that helped us get some open looks. The other key was hit knocked down those open shots. What I was most pleased with was our execution and our defensive intensity."
The Lady Raiders totaled 49 rebounds to win the battle of the boards by 20. They also had 16 assists on their 28 field goals.
Middle Tennessee returns home to face Rice Thursday. Tipoff is 6:30 p.m.
