MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – A two-game homestand against UTSA and UTEP saw Middle Tennessee get back in the win column last week in Murphy Center.
In each game, MT found a way to win in a different situation. After nearly leading wire-to-wire in the UTSA game but fending off a late Roadrunner surge, the Blue Raiders fought back from a double-digit deficit before taking their first lead midway through the second half to down UTEP.
It may sound simple, but sharing the ball has been huge for the recent success of the Blue Raiders. MT has tallied 14 or more assists in every winning effort this season including a season-high 18 assists against UTEP on Saturday.
Sophomore point guard Donovan Sims has helped lead the way in the recent emergence of the Raiders, averaging the fifth most assists per game in conference play and boasting the sixth best assist to turnover ratio through six league games.
After a 2-1 start to conference play, Rice enters the weekend on a three-game losing streak. The two most recent losses were each by a point, but the Owls find themselves slipping down the conference standings after falling to UTSA, UTEP, and North Texas.
The Owls have the fifth best scoring offense in the conference, averaging 75.3 points per game, but also own the third worst scoring defense, allowing 79.2 points per game.
On the other hand, North Texas sits atop Conference USA with a 5-1 league record and a 17-2 overall mark. The Mean Green boast the conference's best scoring margin (13.2) and are perhaps the league's best shooting team at over 47% from the field and 37% from three.
UNT's first and only conference loss came at the hands of UTSA while their only other loss this season came at Oklahoma back in November.
Tip-off for Thursday's game is set for at 7:00 p.m. and will be streamed live on C-USA TV while Saturday's contest tips at 5:00 p.m. and can be seen on ESPN+.
