CHAPEL HILL, N.C.– Middle Tennessee Men's Tennis suffered two losses at the ITA Kickoff Weekend Friday and Saturday against Duke and Utah at UNC.
Middle Tennessee (2-2, 0-0 C-USA) opened Friday's match against Duke (3-1, 0-0 ACC) losing the doubles point. Francisco Rocha / Max Rauch duo led 5-4 before the Blue Devils earned the point.
In singles play, four of the six singles matches went to three sets as the Blue Raiders looked to make a comeback. Stijn Slump forced a third frame with an exciting second set tie breaker 7– 6 (6-4) but did not finish, tied at 2-2. Max Rauch, Pavel Motl and Francisco Rocha each earned third sets before falling 4-0 to the Blue Devils.
Saturday afternoon in Chapel Hill, Rocha/Rauch duo took the first doubles match but Moonen/Slump would fall in a heartbreaking tiebreaker to Utah's (3-2, 0-0 Pac-12) Cory/Benkaim, 7-6 (7-3) giving the Utes 1-0 lead heading into singles.
Again, the Blue Raiders try to battle back with three singles matches going to three sets but were not able finish it out. Rauch, Morillo and Rocha all forced deciding third sets. Middle Tennessee hadn't lost back-back matches since Tulane and Old Dominion in the 2017 season.
