Secure weekend sweep in C-USA play
BOCA RATON, Fla. – Middle Tennessee turned up the defensive pressure to secure a 74-55 win against Florida Atlantic and complete the weekend sweep in its Conference USA opener here Saturday.
The Lady Raiders (11-4, 2-0) jumped out to a 16-3 first-quarter lead and never looked back on its way to the win in absence of Head Coach Rick Insell, who missed the weekend swing due to illness. Assistant Coach Matt Insell, Rick's son, was the acting head coach.
Middle Tennessee forced a season-high 29 turnovers and scored 29 points off of those Florida Atlantic miscues. The Lady Raiders collected 21 steals, led by Jess Louro with five and Anna Jones with four.
"Our defense was sound today," Matt Insell said. "We wanted to get off to a good start and dictate the pace of play. I thought we did a good job of that, overall, from start to finish. We had several different players contribute to these two wins. We continue to improve with ever practice and every game and that was pretty evident today."
While the contributions were aplenty it was the dynamic duo of seniors A'Queen Hayes and Alex Johnson that led the way. They combined for 40 points, 16 rebounds, five assists and six steals.
Hayes was sensational as she turned in her second consecutive double-double on the trip. The senior guard had 23 points, 12 rebounds (five offensive), five assists and three steals.
Johnson was also fabulous with 17 points, four rebounds and three steals. Freshman point guard Taylor Sutton got the Lady Raiders rolling with the first five points of the game. She finished with 13 points on 5-of-9 shooting, including a pair of 3-pointers. Sutton also had two assists and one steal. LaSonja Edwards also had a good game with four points, three rebounds and three steals.
Middle Tennessee shot 43 percent (26-of-31) but generated a great deal of its offense with the suffocating pressure defense. The Lady Raiders led by as many as 27.
The Lady Raiders will return home for a big weekend of conference play next week. They play host to Southern Miss Thursday. Tipoff is 6:30 p.m.
