DePriest ties record, Suder earns first clean sheet
HATTIESBURG, MISS. – Middle Tennessee (7-8-1, 4-4-1 C-USA) secured their fourth conference victory on Friday morning after defeating Southern Miss (7-9, 2-6 C-USA) in the downpour rain by a score of 5-0. The Blue Raiders had four different goal scorers on the night with Peyton DePriest scoring two and Amber Hoot, Maddison Falter and MacKenzie Bonham each putting one away.
Junior forward Peyton DePriest is tied for first all-time in program history with 38 career goals scored after her two goals against Southern Miss. She is just a goal shy of breaking the all-time record which is held by Holly Grogan with 38 goals scored.
"I am really proud of the character we showed given the circumstances we had to play under," said head coach Aston Rhoden. "I thought we played some good soccer against a solid USM team and it was good getting goals from several different players. We now have a to get ready for a stingy UAB team next week."
DePriest scored the first goal of the match just 20 minutes in with a straight shot from the left center of the box.
Not the likely goal scorer, but senior Amber Hoot fired an absolute rocket from about 10 yards outside the box to put the Raiders up 2-0 going in the half. Her second goal of the season, sixth in her career. MT is 5-0-1 when leading at the break this season.
Out of the half, Maddison Falter decided she wanted one on a fabulous shot from outside the box, her fourth goal of the season.
The Golden Eagles applied an aggressive pressure in hopes for a comeback, but freshman keeper making her first start of her career, Hannah Suder made several athletic saves putting her body on the line racking in four saves in about 10-minute stretch.
The Blue Raider goal scored leader, Peyton DePriest put the nail in the coffin in the 80' minute. DePriest countered an USM attack, she dribbled around the Southern Miss keeper who was playing high and walked in her 14th goal of the season into an empty net. That goal ties the all-time record career goals record with 38, she is tied with Holly Grogan with a single game left in the regular season.
When it rains, it pours when freshman MacKenzie Bonham finished the morning off perfectly with a cross box upper 90 goal, her fourth of the season.
NEXT UP – The Blue Raiders will be back at home for senior day on Friday, October 25, squaring off in a high stakes battle with UAB. Kickoff is at 7:00 p.m.
