Owens cards even par round to hold Top 10 spot

COLLEGE GROVE, Tenn. – A hot start to the day saw Middle Tennessee Men's Golf open the sixth annual Intercollegiate at The Grove Sunday near the top of the leaderboard for much of the day, closing out the round at 8-over par (296) and in fifth place.

The Blue Raiders held onto first place until the middle of the round before slipping a bit after the turn, but remain within 12 strokes of the pace set by round one leaders Tennessee (-4).

"I thought we played a solid round of golf today, we just didn't score very well on the Par 5s," Head Coach Mark McEntire said. "We got solid rounds from Tanner, Michael and Gavin, but Mattias and Ilari will have to get better for us to make a move the next two days."

Senior Tanner Owens led the way with an even par 72 landing him in a tie for 10^th place, while a pair of Blue Raider rookies are nipping at his heels.

Freshmen Michael Barnard and Gavin Clements each carded solid rounds of 1-over par 73 in their first appearance at the Intercollegiate at The Grove, and are tied for 16^th entering the second round.

Fellow freshman Mattias Varjun turned in a 6-over par 78 while junior Ilari Saulo shot a 9-over 81 on the day and will look to turn it around and move up the leaderboard on day two.

Blue Raider individuals Palmer Sadlowski and Steven Haremski each finished out round one at 4-over par while Jake Marvelli carded and 8-over par.

Monday's round is scheduled to begin at 12:30 p.m. CT in a shotgun start after the morning rain clears the area. The Blue Raiders will tee off on holes 6 thru 9 while Sadlowski, Haremski and Marvelli will begin their days on holes 14, 15 and 18.

"The conditions will be a little tougher tomorrow, but the plan is to go shoot even par and see where that outs us," McEntire added.
