BOWLING GREEN, Ky.— For the first time in program history, the Blue Raider men's and women's cross country teams swept the Conference USA Championships Saturday morning, and will move on to the NCAA South Regional.
"It's really exciting for both teams today," said Head Coach Keith Vroman. "When you have an opportunity at a conference championship, you have to grasp it and take it home, and both teams did that." Vroman was also named Coach of the Year for both the men's and women's teams.
The men's team finished first with 31 points and a total time of 2:01:09. Individual champion Jacob Choge finished first overall with a time of 23:52.11, leading the Blue Raiders to the champion title. Choge was also named Outstanding Senior of the Meet. Kigen Chemadi took second place in 23:56.35 and Thobile Mosito finished seventh in 24:18.34. Choge, Chemadi and Mosito were all named to the First Team All-Conference.
Brian Rono and Hillary Kimaiyo were named to the Second Team All-Conference after finishing 10th and 11th overall, and Freshman Titus Lagat finished 22nd with a time of 25:13.15.
The women finished with 42 points, 32 points better than runner up Southern Miss, and a total time of 1:27:13.
Eusila Chepkemei led the team as the individual champion, finishing in 16:55.88. Chepkemei and Joice Jebor, who took third, received First Team All-Conference honors. Sophomore Pamela Kosgei and Freshman Mercy Chepkurui were named to the Second Team, as they finished eighth and 11th overall.
