Lady Raiders drop road battle at Belmont
12/14/2019 5:43:00 PM | Women's Basketball
NASHVILLE – Middle Tennessee and Belmont, two teams picked to finish amongst the top of their respective conferences, staged a strong battle but the Bruins essentially pulled away in the latter stages to take a 68-57 win here Saturday afternoon.
Anastasia Hayes continued her strong campaign with 18 points and six assists with just one turnover in 36 minutes of play. The sophomore transfer has scored double figures in every game of her Lady Raider career.
Freshman Courtney Whitson was the only other Lady Raider in double figures, finishing with 12 points and six rebounds in just 24 minutes of action before fouling out. Charity Savage tallied eight points and pulled eight rebounds with seven caroms coming on the offensive end.
Freshman Aislynn Hayes added seven points, seven rebounds and four assists, while sophomore Taylor Sutton added seven points. Kiya Turner came off of the bench with a career-best five points.
"We just made some uncharacteristic mistakes that plagued us against a very well-coached Belmont team," Lady Raider Head Coach Rick Insell said. "We battled and competed out there but at times we looked like a team that had not played in 10 days. We were a little rusty."
Middle Tennessee (6-4) overcame a slow start and trailed 32-29 at the intermission, but Belmont (5-5) came out strong in the third quarter and pushed its advantage to 12 points.
The Lady Raiders put together a strong defensive effort to put themselves back in position to escape with the win, closing to within four in the final stanza; however, the Bruins were able to seal the deal at home.
Middle Tennessee will return to action when it plays host to VCU Wednesday.
