MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Middle Tennessee men's tennis program has added Ricky Hernandez Tong as an assistant coach announced early December by head coach Jimmy Borendame.
"I am incredibly excited to be joining the Blue Raider family," said Ricky Hernandez. "This program has such a great reputation in the college tennis community and I am grateful to coach Jimmy (Borendame) for bringing me on board. We both share the same goals and I cannot wait to continue to foster the winning culture already established here at Middle Tennessee."
A Cardiff, Wales, native, Hernandez just finished up his senior year at New Mexico in Albuquerque, New Mexico. In his four seasons with the Lobos, he finished with a 71-35 singles record and 47-32 in doubles record overall and became the first Lobo in 15 years to win the ITA Regional Championships.
In his most recent season, Hernandez finished his senior season with a 11-6 singles record, all at the No. 1 spot, winning his eight of the last nine matches
His junior year he received All-Mountain West honors and finished with a combined 21-12, leading the team in wins. Went 6-1 at the ITA Mountain Regionals, advancing to the championship match and qualifying for the ITA Fall Championships.
Ricky graduated with a degree in Physical Education, earning Mountain West academic honors in addition.
"Ricky impressed me a few years ago with his competitive play and improvements to his game," said head coach Jimmy Borendame.
