Second such honor for talented rookie
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Aislynn Hayes has been named the United States Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) Tamika Catchings National Freshman of the Week after her sterling performance in Middle Tennessee's win against TCU.
Hayes becomes the first Lady Raider ever to earn the honor twice after also earning the award, Nov. 26. The Murfreesboro, Tenn., product joins Villanova's Maddy Siegrist as the only freshmen to earn the award twice this season.
Hayes continued her outstanding breakout season with a game-high 22 points in Middle Tennessee's 82-70 win against TCU, which entered the game with a 9-1 mark and receiving votes in the Associated Press and ESPN Coaches Top 25 polls.
Not only did Hayes scorch the nets against TCU but she added a season-best eight rebounds to aid in the Lady Raiders winning the rebounding battle, 52-38. Hayes also added three assists.
The well-rounded guard was 7-of-14 from the field, setting a season high for field goals made and her five 3-pointers tied her season high in that category.
Hayes was instrumental in helping Middle Tennessee race out to a strong start and 46-37 halftime lead as she scored 13 of her 22 in the first half. During the first 20 minutes of action, Hayes was sizzling as she was 4-for-4 from the field, including 3-for-3 beyond the arc, and 2-for-2 from the free-throw line.
