Sears, Owens and Sadlowski card under par rounds
ST. GEORGE, Utah – Middle Tennessee men's golf put together a strong showing in their first round of the spring season, turning in a 4-under par 284 to land in second place through 18 holes on day one of the Pat Hicks Thunderbird Invitational.
The Blue Raiders sit just two strokes off the pace set by Northern Colorado and carry a nine-stroke advantage over Utah State and Southern Utah into day two at Sunbrook Golf Club.
It was newcomer Cooper Sears, a Vanderbilt transfer playing in his first round as a Blue Raider, who provided the fireworks on day one with an impressive 3-under par 69 placing him in second among all individuals.
Junior Tanner Owens sits just behind Sears after carding a 2-under 70 in round one with freshman Palmer Sadlowski adding an under-par round of his own at 1-under 71. The rookie gave MT three golfers in the Top 10 as Owens ranks tied for third while Sadlowski is tied for eighth.
"I was very pleased with the start today," Head Men's Golf Coach Mark McEntire exclaimed. "We got a great round from Cooper in his Blue Raider debut and solid rounds from Tanner and Palmer as well."
Senior James Beckner turned in a 2-over 74 in round one while classmate Marcus Byrd, playing in his first round of the season after missing the fall due to injury, shot a 5-over 77.
"We put ourselves in position and have a chance to win a golf tournament tomorrow," McEntire added. "I would expect James and Marcus to turn it around tomorrow and it should be fun!"
Freshman Jake Marvelli, playing as an individual, turned in a first round score of 80 in St. George.
The Blue Raiders open the second round at 11:00 a.m. CT Tuesday alongside Northern Colorado and Southern Utah. MT will tee off on holes one through three.
