Round 1 Results
RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico – Middle Tennessee Men's Golf opened up their three-day stay at the Puerto Rico Classic Sunday with a round of 7-over 295 at Rio Mar Country Club.
"Overall I was pleased with our round today," Head Coach Mark McEntire said. "I felt like we gave a few shots away down the stretch, but we are still in a good spot."
Senior Marcus Byrd and junior Tanner Owens led the way for the Blue Raiders on day one, each firing rounds of 1-over par 73 to sit inside the Top 30 in a talented field boasting eight Top 40 ranked teams.
Freshman Palmer Sadlowski is right behind his upperclassmen teammates at 2-over par (74) through 18 holes, but faltered slightly down the stretch after a strong start to the day.
Sophomore Cooper Sears is currently 3-over (75) while senior James Backner carded a 6-over 78 on the opening day.
Although the Blue Raiders currently sit tied for 10th out of 15 teams in the stacked field, they are a stroke ahead of No. 40 Iowa and 11 strokes up on No. 5 Alabama. MT is also just two strokes back of seventh place Purdue to put them in striking distance of a steep climb on day two.
"It was good to see Marcus finish with two birdies and hope that it propels him into the next two days," McEntire added. "We have a very solid team and I just want to see improvement every round."
Round two begins Monday morning at 7:30 a.m. local time, 5:30 a.m. CT. Live scoring can be followed at Golfstat.com.
