BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Middle Tennessee women's basketball team looks to get back on the winning track Saturday afternoon when the Lady Raiders travel to Birmingham, Ala. to face UAB. Game time is 2 p.m. CT at the Bartow Center.
Scouting the Blazers (21-5, 9-4)
UAB is 21-5 overall, 9-4 in Conference USA play under veteran head coach Randy Norton. This season the Blazers are 10-2 at home in the Bartow Arena.
The Blazers' veteran team is led by Rachael Childress (14.0 ppg) and Deanna Kuzmanic (12.5 ppg). Likewise, Katelynn Thomas (11.7) and Miyah Barnes (10.5) also tally double figures for UAB.
Saturday's contest will mark the 19th meeting between the two teams, with Middle Tennessee leading the all-time series, 11-7.
Blue Raiders Fall to Marshall in the Murphy Center
Last time out, Middle Tennessee experienced a 53-59 setback to conference foe, Marshall. Despite a combined 39 points from senior duo, Alex Johnson and A'Queen Hayes, the team was not able to take down the Thundering Herd last Saturday.
However, the Lady Raiders won the turnover battle (committing four and forcing 13) and the rebounding, creating a +8 margin over Marshall (33-25).
Middle Tennessee Top 15 Nationally for Scoring Defense
The Lady Raiders are 14th nationally in scoring defense, allowing just 55.6 points per game this season. Middle Tennessee has held 17 of its opponents to less than 60 points and are 15-2 in those games, falling to Belmont and Marshall.
Johnson, A Scoring Machine
Senior standout, Johnson moved into 10th on the all-time scoring list (1,740) and looking toward moving to ninth as the Murfreesboro, Tenn. native is only 16 points shy of tying WNBA and former Blue Raider star's all-time total (1,756), Alysha Clark.
Similarly, Johnson's electric shooting this season ranks her 25th nationally among NCAA Division I women's basketball players for field goal percentage with a .570 mark (138-of-242).
Up Next, Senior Night
The Blue Raiders will return to the Murphy Center next weekend (Saturday, Mar. 2) for their final regular season contest in Murfreesboro. The team will honor A'Queen Hayes, LaSonja Edwards, Jordan Majors, Katie Collier, Jess Louro and Blue Raiders standout Alex Johnson.
