MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - After a hard-fought game against No. 6 Tennessee in last night's Midstate Classic, Middle Tennessee (14-12) rebounded with an exciting win at home against another in-state opponent in Belmont (12-7).
Kailey Ahlstrom struck out two to begin the game, and the Blue Raider bats provided some early run support for the freshman in the bottom of the first frame. Lani Rodriguez singled home Summer Burgess, who reached on an infield single then stole second to get in scoring position.
Belmont answered in the third with two runs of their own, both coming with two outs. After both teams went down in order in their half of the fourth, the Bruins mustered one hit in the top of the fifth but were unable to extend their lead.
The Bruins lost their lead in the bottom half of the fifth inning, as Ryan King knocked a double into the left-center gap to bring around the pinch-running Savannah Freeman to knot the game at two runs apiece. With two outs in the same frame, pinch-running Keely McGee scored as Sydney Heath dropped in a single to left field.
After no runs were scored in the sixth, the Bruins tied the game up once again with a run in the seventh.
Cushing led off the eighth inning with a double, followed by a Brooke McClure walk. With nobody out and two Blue Raiders on, King found the gap between first and second base to shoot a single into right field. Cushing rounded third and beat the throw home to score the fourth MT run of the night, ending the game.
The Blue Raiders will open Conference USA play on Saturday with a doubleheader against UTSA on the road. The first C-USA series of the new season for MT will end with a third game in San Antonio on Sunday.
The Roadrunners bring a 12-11 record into the weekend series, which will be their second C-USA series of the season. UTSA took all three games from UAB in San Antonio last weekend.
