Blue Raiders stun Roadrunners with comeback victory
3/15/2019 9:34:00 PM | Baseball
SAN ANTONIO – With two outs in the bottom of the ninth, Darien Prewett stepped up and delivered the biggest hit of his career, a two-out, two-strike, bases loaded double down the left field line to score three runs and give the Blue Raiders the lead.
Middle Tennessee (6-11, 1-0) would secure the victory in the bottom half of the ninth, beating UTSA (7-12, 0-1) by a score of 7-4.
Going into the ninth inning, the Blue Raiders were stifled after combining for just two hits through the first eight innings. But head coach Jim Toman knew what his team was capable of.
"The team was pretty loose in the dugout," Toman said. "Obviously the two-out, two-strike hit by Prewett was the big hit we needed."
Aaron Antonini got the ninth inning going with a leadoff double down the left field line. Blake Benefield would single and come around to score when JT Mabry smashed a two-RBI double past third base for his first RBIs of his career. After a walk and a hit batsman, Prewett stepped in with the bases loaded and delivered a hit that would give the Blue Raiders the only lead they would need.
"I just tried to stay short and get the job done for these guys," Prewett said. "It was amazing, the excitement my teammates had was one for the books."
MT would grab two more runs in the inning, with Nick Carnevale and Aaron Antonini both picking up RBI hits.
Scheldon Paulk made quick work of the Roadrunners in the bottom of the ninth, setting UTSA down in order and picking up the save.
Right-hander Carson Lester got the start for MT. Lester, who went 6.2 innings, did a great job of keeping the Blue Raiders in the game against an aggressive Roadrunner offense. John Dowless held the Roadrunners hitless in 1.1 innings of work and picked up the win.
WHAT'S NEXT?
The Blue Raiders looks to win the series tomorrow at 2 p.m. Lefty Peyton Wigginton will take the mound for the Blue Raiders.
