STATESBORO, Ga. – Middle Tennessee kicked off the Schenkel Invitational Friday with a team round of 4-over par 292 to sit in a tie for seventh place with 36 holes left to play.
The Blue Raiders scuffled a little in the early going, but finished the day strong with a mark of 6-under through their final five holes to climb six spots up the leaderboard and back into striking distance of the leaders.
Senior Marcus Byrd led the way for MT in Friday's opening round, using four birdies in his final five holes to jump into a tie for sixth place with a 2-under par 70 on the day.
After carding three bogeys in his first five holes, sophomore Cooper Sears went bogey free for the final 13 holes with three birdies mixed in to turn in a strong round of even par 72 and lands in the Top 15.
Senior James Beckner and junior Tanner Owens each logged rounds of 3-over 75 in the opening round while freshman Palmer Sadlowski carded a 9-over 81.
"I am really proud of the way the team finished the round today," head coach Mark McEntire said. "We got great rounds from Marcus and Cooper and I was happy to see James shoot a solid round for us today."
Middle Tennessee is tied with C-USA foe UAB and within four strokes of Georgia Southern (+2), Kentucky (+1) and Notre Dame (E). Co-leaders College of Charleston and Mississippi State are each at 5-under.
"I still feel like we can improve and tomorrow the goal is to get better and move up the board," McEntire added. "This team can be really good!"
The Blue Raiders will tee off at 9:00 a.m. ET Saturday alongside UAB and Minnesota on the first tee.
