Blue Raiders fall to Lipscomb in extras
3/19/2019 10:33:00 PM | Baseball
The Blue Raiders (7-13) and Bisons (11-8) went into the 11th inning tied at 6, when the visitors decided it was time to call it a night. A one-out double drove in a run to break the tie, then a fielder's choice gave Lipscomb an 8-6 lead that would prove to be the final.
"I really thought we played pretty hard … but it didn't quite work out," MT head coach Jim Toman said. "Congratulations to Lipscomb, they did a really nice job … and it was a heck of a college game. It just didn't turn out the right way for us."
In the first inning, it looked as if the game were heading towards plenty of runs. After Lipscomb started the evening with a score in the top, Middle Tennessee answered with three in the bottom.
Following two straight singles to start the bottom half, sophomore second baseman Nick Carnevale smacked a double down the left-field line, driving in a pair for his eighth RBI of the season. He then scored on a sacrifice fly one batter later to give MT the early two-run advantage.
The hot bats wouldn't last, at least not for the home Raiders. Over the next six innings, they'd manage just three hits, never making much of a scoring threat.
On the other side of the diamond, the Bisons tied the score with single runs in the fourth and fifth, then took the lead back with a couple of scores in the top of the seventh, going up 5-3.
"It would have been nice early in the game to add on when we were up 3-1," Toman said. "That could have changed the whole outcome of the game."
Giving up the lead in the seventh finally seemed to ignite something in Middle Tennessee's bats.
After Lipscomb's pair of scores in the top, the Blue Raiders responded with three in the bottom.
Senior Blake Benefield got things started with a double to drive in JT Mabry. Then after a walk and groundout, sophomore Peter Brown, making the first start of his MT career, hit a grounder into left field. Two runners scored, giving the Raiders the lead back briefly 6-5 before Lipscomb pushed another run across in the top of the ninth to send the game to extras.
"We did fight back, and I'm proud of the guys for that," Toman said. "We've showed that a little bit late in games lately; we've been scratching, fighting and clawing a little bit. It just didn't quite work out tonight."
Brown had two hits, the first two of his MT career, to go with two RBIs to lead the Raiders. Carnevale had a hit, two runs scored and two RBIs and also walked twice.
On the mound, MT had seven pitchers – Josh Young, Andy Rivera, John Dowless, AJ Spencer, Tyler Holcombe, Scheldon Paulk and Grant Williams – toss in the loss.
Middle Tennessee will get back into Conference USA action on Friday when LA Tech travels to Murfreesboro for the Blue Raiders' first conference homestand of the season. Friday's first pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
"We'll have our hands full [with LA Tech]," Toman said. "That's a really good team coming in here to play. We're looking forward to it."
