MT's comeback falls short against Belmont
3/6/2019 5:51:00 PM | Baseball
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The cold weather Wednesday cooled off Middle Tennessee's bats against Belmont until it was too little, too late.
With their Nashville neighbor visiting Reese Smith Jr. Field, the Blue Raiders (5-7) couldn't score until the bottom of the ninth, when they pushed four runs across before falling 5-4 to the Bruins (5-7).
"Belmont's pitchers kept us off balance … but I'm proud of our guys for fighting back," MT head coach Jim Toman said. "The problem was we didn't play very good defense … even though our pitchers kept us in the game for most of it."
Middle Tennessee chased Belmont starting pitcher Stone Selby after just 2 2/3 innings thanks to three hits and two walks, but four relievers came in to shut things down.
The blue-clad men got only three more hits over the next five innings until the bottom of the ninth, when they finally came alive at the dish.
After scoring two runs on a balk and wild pitch, the Blue Raiders strung together three two-out hits and reached once on an error. The final base knock, a single from reigning TSWA Hitter of the Week Aaron Antonini, brought one runner home and almost a second, but sophomore Peter Brown was thrown out at the plate to end the contest.
"I thought the umpire got the call right, but it was close," Toman said. "If that throw was off by a foot either way, we'd probably be safe."
Freshman right-hander Josh Young got the first start of his young career for MT on the bump, and he did a good job of keeping the Blue Raiders in the game early despite taking the loss.
The youngster lasted 3 1/3 innings, allowing one earned run and three hits, striking out two and walking two.
"He got another loss to his record, and now he's 1-3, but he's pitched a lot better than that," Toman said. "He's a kid that walked on, and you usually know what you're going to get from him."
Five relievers finished out the remainder of the game, giving up four hits and five runs (three earned).
At the dish, the Blue Raiders were led by two-hit outings from sophomores Brycen Thomas and Nick Carnevale. Senior Drew Huff and Antonini had RBIs, while Blake Benefield and JT Mabry also had hits.
While he was proud of his guys for fighting back in the ninth, Toman wants to see a better product in the first eight innings, particularly at the plate. His Blue Raiders will travel to Kentucky for three games this weekend.
"We have to get all three facets of the game going," he said. "We just have to score runs when you get an opportunity to score early. You can't wait until the ninth inning."
Friday's first pitch against the Wildcats is set for 3 p.m.
