WEST POINT, Miss. – After perhaps their strongest showing of the season at last weekend's Mason Rudolph Championship, Middle Tennessee men's golf faces its final test before postseason play this week as the squad tees off Monday in the Old Waverly Collegiate Championship.
The 54-hole event, hosted by Mississippi State, is set to be played in two days on the Par 72, 7,000-yard Old Waverly Golf Club in West Point, Miss.
The Blue Raiders, ranked No. 122 by Golfstat, are one of 15 teams in the field and come in behind Vanderbilt (4), Ole Miss (55), Mississippi State (57), Memphis (87), South Alabama (91), Louisiana-Monroe (96) and Little Rock (104).
Also in the field and ranked behind Middle Tennessee are Bradley, Chattanooga, Lipscomb, Louisiana-Lafayette, Louisiana Tech, South Dakota and Southern Miss.
Of the 14 competitors in the field, MT saw three last weekend in Franklin and earned wins over Mississippi State and Chattanooga while falling to Vanderbilt on their home course.
Head coach Mark McEntire will keep the lineup that he's used all spring as it continues to improve heading towards the Conference USA Championship.
"I feel like things are starting to fall into place," McEntire said. "I was really happy with our performance last week and look for this week to finish our preparation for conference."
Impressive scoring averages on the season from the Raider trio of senior Marcus Byrd (72.1), sophomore Cooper Sears (72.1) and junior Tanner Owens (72.4) lead the lineup that includes senior James Beckner and freshman Palmer Sadlowski who are coming off of strong final rounds at Vanderbilt Legends Club.
Round one will feature an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start with the Blue Raiders teeing off alongside Little Rock and Louisiana-Lafayette on holes 7-10.
"We had storms come through here last night and they have delayed the practice round until 2:00, so conditions will be soft and course will play long," McEntire added. "We're hoping to have a good week and then get ready for conference."
