MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – For the third time this semester and fifth time in his career, Middle Tennessee senior Marcus Byrd has been named Conference USA Golfer of the Week following his individual title at Mississippi State's Old Waverly Collegiate Championship.
Byrd was sensational this week at Old Waverly Golf Club, firing three consecutive under par rounds on the way to matching his career low and the school record 54-hole total at 13-under par 203 (70-66-67).
"What a week for Marcus," head coach Mark McEntire said. "He just dominated another really good field and made a case to be the player of the year in the conference. He deserves it!"
The 6-under par 66 in Monday's second round is also a career low for the Atlanta native and matches the eighth best round ever played by a Blue Raider.
Byrd led the field of 84 golfers in birdies with 16 on the week and added an eagle on the Par 5 9th hole in the first round, helping him to a sizzling 11-under par (4.08) mark in Par 5 scoring to lead the tournament by three strokes in the category.
The individual title at Old Waverly is Byrd's second in his impressive career following a win earlier this semester at the Puerto Rico Classic and makes him the 16th golfer in Blue Raider history to collect multiple individual titles.
Byrd's triumph paired with consecutive strong team finishes have the Blue Raiders riding high at the right time as they tee off Monday in the Conference USA Championship in hopes of earning a third straight NCAA Regional berth.
"It looks to be coming together for us at the right time," McEntire added.
