Raiders look to hold Top 4 spot on Tuesday
Round 2 Results
TEXARKANA, Ark. – With 36 holes behind them at the Conference USA Championship, the Blue Raiders are right in the thick of things at 5-over par and in fourth place.
The Blue Raiders are just six strokes back of team leader UTSA (-1) and within two strokes of WKU (+3) and UAB (+4).
Closely trailing Middle Tennessee and battling for one of the four coveted match play spots are Charlotte (+6), UTEP (+7) and Rice (+9).
The Raiders have a pair of golfers holding down Top 5 spots after Monday's play as Marcus Byrd (72-70=142) and Cooper Sears (71-71=142) each sit tied for fourth at 2-under par and four strokes back of the individual leader.
The pair are two of only nine golfers in the field 65 who managed to card two rounds of par or better on Monday and combined to collect 16 of MT's 27 birdies on the day.
Junior Tanner Owens battled through the day to card a pair of 2-over par rounds and is tied for 27th at 4-over par (74-74=148) as he looks to make a move on Tuesday.
Two strokes back of Owens is senior James Beckner at 6-over par (75-75=150) while freshman Palmer Sadlowski bounced back from a tough first round to post a 2-over 74 in round two and finish the day 12-over par (82-74=156).
"I thought Marcus and Cooper played great today," head coach Mark McEntire said. "This golf course is really good.
"I'm also really proud of Tanner as well as Palmer for his play in the second round. They grinded out a solid score without having their best game."
The Blue Raiders tee off in the final round of stroke play beginning at 8:40 a.m. Tuesday morning alongside the Charlotte 49ers.
Should Middle Tennessee clinch a Top 4 spot at the conclusion of 54 holes of stroke play, they will compete in the match play semifinals on either Tuesday afternoon or Wednesday depending on weather in the area.
"We have a chance tomorrow and I look forward to seeing how these guys respond," McEntire added.
