TEXARKANA, Ark. – Behind a stellar round of 4-under par 68 by senior James Beckner on Tuesday, Middle Tennessee men's golf posted a 1-under par 287 in the final round of stroke play at the Conference USA Championship to move into second place and clinch a spot in Wednesday's match play semifinals.
The Blue Raiders, now 4-over par (292-189-287=868) on the week, have shown steady improvement each round culminating in the lowest team round of the day on Tuesday as they now prepare to compete for a second consecutive conference title during match play.
"What a day for this program and James Beckner," head coach Mark McEntire exclaimed. "James shot a 68 and the team made match play. That was the round of the year for him and what a time to do it!"
"I am so proud of this team and the way they played this week. To get into match play was the first goal and we've accomplished that."
Beckner, whose 4-under 68 is a season- and career-high while also ranking as the best round of the week at Texarkana Country Club, made the biggest jump of the day on the individual leaderboard as he moved up 19 spots into a tie for 17th at 2-over par (75-75-68=218).
Sophomore Cooper Sears was the top finisher for the Blue Raiders, coming in at 4-under par (71-71-70=212) and tied for second just a stroke back of the individual medalist.
The 54-hole total of 212 tied a career low for the Mount Juliet native, who transferred to the Blue Raiders at the beginning of the spring semester.
Senior Marcus Byrd earned a Top 10 spot on the week as a 3-over par 75 landed him with a 1-over par (71-71-75=217) 54-hole scorecard.
Junior Tanner Owens turned in a 2-over par 74 for the third consecutive day to finish stroke play at 6-over (74-74-74=222) while freshman Palmer Sadlowski carded a 3-over 75 in round three and was 15-over (82-74-75=231) on the week.
Middle Tennessee (+4) will face Charlotte (+5) in the match play semifinals Wednesday morning, and should the Blue Raiders down the 49ers they will face the winner of UTSA (E) versus UAB (+7) for the Conference USA title.
"We are not done yet and will leave it all out there tomorrow and look to send James and Marcus out on a high note," McEntire added.
