MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee gave Southern Miss quite a finish in the final game of the three-game series, but the Golden Eagles survived 6-5 to claim the series sweep.
Brett Stratinsky continued to swing a hot bat as he was 2-for-4 with two home runs, three RBI and two runs scored. He was the only Blue Raider with a multi-hit performance.
The Blue Raiders jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first compliments of back-to-back doubles off of the bats of Aaron Antonini and Blake Benefield. Antonini delivered a one-out double and was chased plateward on a two-bagger by Benefield, who came in to score on a throwing error.
Brett Stratinsky pushed the advantage to 3-0 when he homered for the second time in as many games in the bottom of the second. His colossal blast cleared the right field fence with ease and brought hundreds of Little Leaguers to their collective feet as the lanky first baseman circled the bases following his no doubt about it home run.
Unfortunately, for the Blue Raiders, the offense stalled following the second inning and the three-run advantage has evaporated by the end of the sixth when Southern Miss had rallied to tie the game, 3-3. The Golden Eagle comeback had more to do with Middle Tennessee's faulty defense than it did the visitor's offense.
Middle Tennessee committed five errors in the first seven innings leading to five unearned runs. All of the Blue Raider infielders had a hand in the faulty fielding as each was guilty of at least one error.
The game marked the return of senior Drew Huff who entered the game as a relief pitcher with two on and one out in a 3-3 game in the top of the seventh. It was Huff's first action since being hit in the face in the second game of the WKU series three weeks earlier. Huff was one pitch from getting out of a bases-loaded jam in the seventh, but Southern Miss' Hunter LeBlanc unloaded a bases-clearing double to break the deadlock and provide his team with a 6-3 lead.
It was a nice return to the field for Huff; however, as he went 1-2/3 innings, allowed two hits and one run. David Zoz also turned in another strong start with five innings of two-hit baseball, allowing three runs, none earned.
Stratinsky struck again in the bottom of the seventh when he followed a JT Mabry single with a towering two-run blast to pull the Blue Raiders to within 6-5. He came up again in the bottom of the ninth and sent a deep drive to right but it was caught in foul ground to end the game.
