Dobyns Bennett standout averaged double-double
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee continued to accumulate talent with the signing of Kingsport Dobyns Bennett standout Courtney Whitson to a national letter of intent.
Whitson, a 6-foot-1 post player, was a dominant force at Kingsport Dobyns Bennett where she was the school's all-time leader in scoring and rebounding. She is the seventh player in the 2019 Middle Tennessee signing class.
"We are ecstatic about Courtney's decision to become a Lady Raider," Middle Tennessee Head Coach Rick Insell said. "I've been watching this young lady for a long time, and I have felt she is a perfect fit for our program."
Whitson was a dominant force at Dobyns Bennett, scoring 2,458 career points for the Indians. It is the most points by a Dobyns Bennett player, male or female. She is also the school's all-time leading rebounder with 1,476 caroms.
"There is something special going on in Murfreesboro and I cannot wait to be a part of it," Whitson posted on her Twitter account Sunday night. "I am thankful God gave me this opportunity."
Whitson averaged a double-double for her career with 17.7 points and 10.6 rebounds. She was a 2019 Gatorade All-American nominee, McDonald's All-American nominee and Miss Basketball nominee. The hard-working post collected 81 double-doubles in her career, also a school record.
"As a player – wow!," Dobyns Bennett Head Coach Bill Francis told the Johnson City Press. "I have coached boys and girls basketball for a long time and would be hard pressed to think of a player I coaches with the competitive spirit of Courtney. During her time here, her game has continued to evolve into becoming the complete player she is now."
Whitson started all 139 games of her prep career at the storied Class AAA high school that is 100 years old. She is the sole member of the school's 2,000-1,000 club. In addition to her status as the all-time great in scoring and rebounding, Whitson also owns several single-season marks including: single-season 3-point field goals (73), single-season points (836), single-season rebounds (389), single-game rebounds (22), single-season free-throw percentage (.780) and second all-time for assists (319).
