Martin, Tenn.- Despite being out hit, the Middle Tennessee softball team managed to edge out UT Martin on Wednesday at Bettye Giles Softball Field. The Raiders (22-16, C-USA 6-3) were led by freshmen pitcher Kailey Ahlstrom, who shutout the Skyhawks (23-15, OVC 5-3) through seven innings of work.
The Minnesota native allowed no runs, on six hits, walked one, and struck out one on her way to her sixth win this season. Ahlstrom has pitched five complete games and has an ERA of 2.84 this far through the 2019 campaign.
"Ahlstrom was tremendous today," said Head Coach Jeff Breeden. "I thought she never got in much of a jam at all, I thought she controlled their hitters very well and didn't seem to get bothered when they had baserunners on."
The Raider offence was anchored by Lexi Cushing who hit her eleventh home run this season and number 30 of her career. The Solo shot would put the Raiders up, 2-0, against the Skyhawks, and would be enough to propel the Raiders to victory.
"As soon as I made contact I knew that it was gone," said Cushing.
Cushing broke the school career home run record (previously 23) on March 16 in San Antonio, and continues to add on to her total. The junior has been hot lately, hitting three home runs in the last four games.
"It's just like any other one, and I try and not make the moment bigger than it already is," says Cushing.
The Raiders will return home this weekend for a three game series with UAB beginning at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday and 12:00 p.m. on Sunday.
