Blue Raiders fall to No. 7 Vandy

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee played host to nationally ranked Vanderbilt Tuesday and fell victim to one of the nation's best offenses.
The No. 7 Commodores made the short trip down Interstate 24 from Nashville and snapped the Blue Raiders' four-game winning streak with a 15-3 win.
MT (13-19) went into the night hot offensively, averaging over 11 runs per game in its last four, but Vandy (25-8) showed its prowess with 15 hits, nine for extra bases, and drew nine walks.
Vanderbilt started its offensive assault in the first inning, when Preseason All-American JJ Bleday hit the first of his two home runs in the game, a three-run shot to right field. It was also the first of the Commodores' four long balls.
The Raiders would cut into the lead by adding two runs in the bottom of the second when Darryl Freeman Jr. hit an RBI double and Darien Prewett followed with a run-scoring single. It was as close as the home team would get, though.
The visitors answered with seven runs in the top of the third inning, pushing ahead too far for a comeback.
Middle Tennessee would add another run in the bottom of the seventh, but the Commodores scored three in the fourth and two more in the seventh.
The Blue Raiders finished with seven hits, one each for Prewett, Freeman, Nick Carnevale, Brycen Thomas and Tanner Parker and a 2-for-3 night for senior Blake Benefield, including a double. Freeman and Prewett had RBIs, and Freeman scored twice while Peyton Wigginton crossed home once.
MT will have a quick turnaround with an away game at Murray State upcoming Wednesday. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
An 8-5 victory over the Racers on April 2 started the Blue Raiders' four-game winning streak that ended Tuesday. Middle Tennessee owns the all-time series advantage over its nearby foe 60-43 and has won eight in a row.
