Late rally from FIU downs Blue Raiders

MURFREESBORO, Tenn.— With the threat of rain in the forecast, conditions were perfect for another pitching duel at Reese Smith Field Saturday afternoon. Up until the latter third of the game, we had just that, with both starters going for at least seven innings and allowing no more than four runs. Unfortunately for Middle Tennessee (18-32, 11-15), starter Peyton Wigginton couldn't get the run support he needed in his 7.1 innings of work, as the Blue Raiders fell to FIU (21-29, 10-16) by a score of 7-3.
"Wigginton pitched well, but you're not going to win to many games when you're out-hit 13 to five," said Head Coach Jim Toman. "We've got to regroup for the big game tomorrow."
The Blue Raiders led until the eighth inning when FIU plated four runs to take a 6-3 advantage.
For Middle Tennessee, it was the second day in a row that its' starter completed at least seven innings of work. Wigginton worked 4.1 innings before surrendering a hit or run and it was the left-handers fifth game of the season in which he'd complete at least seven innings striking out at least six batters. The sophomore wound up allowing four runs on the afternoon prior to FIU's big eighth inning.
At the plate, the Blue Raiders were paced by shortstop Myles Christian. With the sky beginning to darken, Christian dug into the box with two outs in the fourth looking to give Middle Tennessee the game's first lead. The sophomore did just that by sending a 2-1 pitch deep into the grey-Murfreesboro sky. The two-run shot was Christian's team-high 10th of the season. The home run also tied him with catcher Aaron Antonini for the team lead in RBIs with 30.
Blake Benefield and Darrell Freeman both doubled. For Benefield, it was his team-high 12th double of the season and for Freeman, it was his eighth two-base hit on the year.
