Chemadi Claims Gold; 17 Blue Raiders Qualify For Finals on Sunday

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Kigen Chemadi inks the 3,000-meter steeplechase champion title on Saturday afternoon during the third day of the Conference USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships with a time of 8:47.93, finishing close to 10 seconds faster than the second-place finisher.
Along with Chemadi earning his first champion title of the conference championships, 17 Blue Raiders qualified for the finals on Sunday in their respective events.
Eusila Chepkemei notched the first qualification mark on Saturday morning, after claiming first in the women's 1,500-meter event. Chempkemei posted a time of 4:35.08 while Joice Jebor also qualified in the women's event, crossing the line with a time of 4:39.61. On the men's side, Kigen Chemadi (3:58.37, 6th) and Brian Rono (3:59.51, 8th) qualified for the men's final in the 1,500-meter on Sunday afternoon.
In the women's 400-meter event, Joycelyn Assafuah posted a third-place overall finish while claiming an automatic bid to the finals, winning her heat with a time of 54.19. Likewise, Willington Wright claimed first-place in the men's fourth heat of the men's 400-meter event to secure a spot in the conference finals.
Meanwhile, in the women's 100-meter preliminary event, Cecilia Francis and Edidiong Odiong claimed first-place in their respective heats to advance to the women's finals on Sunday afternoon. Francis posted a second-place finish overall (11.62) while Odiong finished fourth (11.70) in the preliminary race.
Four Blue Raider women qualified for the 800-meter finals on Sunday afternoon. Patience Akanwogba posted the best finish in the preliminaries with a third-place finish with a time of 2:11.57. Likewise, Chepkemei (2:12.80), Abike Egbeniyi (2:14.44) and Quanisha Marshall (2:17.20) all qualified for the women's 800-meter finals. On the men's side, Tre'Von Sanders notched the best men's time in the 800-meter preliminaries, crossing the line at 1:51.47. Likewise, Brian Rono earned a spot in the 800-meter finals after posting a time of 1:52.41.
Braam Bisschop qualifies for the men's 400-meter hurdles final on Sunday after claiming a seventh-place finish with a time of 53.27.
Likewise, Odiong and Francis qualified for their second finals events of the day after claiming top-three finishes in the women's 200-meter preliminary event on Saturday. Odiong posted the best time of the prelims, crossing the line with a time of 23.88 while Francis finished third in the preliminary event with a time of 23.92.
In the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase final Rachel Kigen posted a ninth-place finish with a time of 10:54.16 while Rachael Kosgei finished 16th, crossing the line with a time of 11:46.93.
On the field, Jacob Patten secured second-place in the men's high jump on Saturday afternoon. Patten finished with a height of 2.08m to claim the silver in the field event.
