Beckner leads way with 2-under par 70
MURRELLS INLET, S.C. – Middle Tennessee men's golf bounced back on day two of the NCAA Myrtle Beach Regional with a round of 5-over par 293, shaving 12 strokes off their opening round score.
The Blue Raiders made up ground on three teams on the day and will enter Wednesday's final round at 22-over par (305-293=598) and within striking distance of Oregon State (+14), Cal State Fullerton (+14) and VCU (+16).
Senior James Beckner led the squad's day two improvement with a round of 2-under par 70, moving 27 spots up the leaderboard to match teammate Cooper Sears at 3-over par through 36 holes.
Junior Tanner Owens fired an even par 72 on Tuesday and moved past 13 golfers in the field of 75 to find himself one stroke back of Beckner and Sears at 4-over par (76-72=148).
"I thought it was a decent day today for us. I'm very proud of James Beckner shooting 2-under today and we also got a nice round from Tanner. We had a little bit of a rough finish there coming down the stretch. Palmer had a good round going but made a double (bogey) on 17 and then Cooper finished with a double on 18."
After an even par 72 on Monday, Sears turned in a 3-over par 75 on the second day despite collecting five birdies on his scorecard.
Freshman Palmer Sadlowski shaved four strokes off his first round score to finish the day with a 4-over par 76 while classmate Jake Marvelli carded a 7-over par 79 on Tuesday.
"All in all I'm happy with the team and the way they came back today after a tough first round. Now it's time to send off James Beckner, one of our premier student-athletes, on a high note with a low round."
Middle Tennessee will tee off on the front nine once again on Wednesday with Marvelli leading things off at 9:20 a.m. ET. He will be followed by Sadlowski, Owens, Beckner and Sears in 11-minute intervals.
