Blue Raiders hang on in weather altered game
5/4/2019 9:04:00 PM | Baseball
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – It took seven hours, but the Blue Raiders (17-29, 10-13) were able to hang on to their lead to even the series against Charlotte (17-27-1, 8-14-1) in a weather altered game by a score of 3-2 Saturday evening in the Queen City.
Peyton Wigginton was on his way to a quality start, going five innings without allowing a single run, but the only thing that could stop the tall lefty, was lightning. Just before the start of the bottom of the sixth, the umpire crew was alerted to the severe weather that was moving its way into the area and decided to clear the field. This would be the start of a four hour lightning and rain delay that would end Wigginton's day prematurely.
Once the severe weather cleared, the two teams picked up right where they left off after the lengthy delay. David Zoz headed to the mound and picked up right where Wigginton left off, striking out the side in the bottom of the sixth. Zoz went four innings, allowing four hits and two runs but was able to thwart a 49ers comeback while picking up his first save of the season.
The Blue Raiders wasted no time putting runs on the board early on, connecting on four straight hits to start the game with RBI singles by Wigginton and Brett Stratinsky. Aaron Antonini would pick up the important insurance RBI when he grounded out to score Peter Brown in the seventh inning.
Both Darien Prewett and Antonini led the team with two hits in four plate appearances.
What's Next?
MT looks to secure the series victory tomorrow. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m.
