FORT WALTON BEACH, Fla. - The Wuerffel Trophy announced its watch list today of 91 players from college football's Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) and Middle Tennessee's Khalil Brooks is on the distinguished list.
Brooks, who has earned second team all-conference honors two years in a row, enters the 2019 campaign ranked fifth all-time in sacks (14.5) at Middle Tennessee and fifth in tackles for loss (33.5). A preseason All-C-USA pick in 2018 and 2019, Brooks had 68 tackles in 2018 and shared the team lead with 14.5 TFLs.
The Wuerffel Trophy, known as "College Football's Premier Award for Community Service," is presented each February in Fort Walton Beach. Named after 1996 Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Danny Wuerffel from the University of Florida, the Wuerffel Trophy is awarded to the FBS player that best combines exemplary community service with athletic and academic achievement.
Brooks, out of Atlanta, Ga., will open his senior year with a degree in hand and is well on pace to become just the third player in school history to record 40 career TFLs.
The formal announcement of the 2019 recipient will be made at the National Football Foundation's festivities in New York City on December 10. The presentation of the 2019 Wuerffel Trophy will occur at the 51st All Sports Association Awards Banquet on February 14, 2020 in Fort Walton Beach.
