CINCINNATI, Ohio – Middle Tennessee closed out its first 36-hole day of the year Monday with mixed results, landing in tenth in the team standings after two rounds despite having junior Ilari Saulo inside the Top 10 on the individual leaderboard.
Saulo posted a stellar 2-under par 69 in the opening round before an even par 71 in round two left him tied for tenth at 2-under par (69-71=140) with 18 holes to go.
The junior looks to have continued his impressive start to the season, having posted a 5-under par total at the Jim Rivers Intercollegiate to share individual runner-up honors.
Freshman Gavin Clements finished his day out with a birdie to tally the second best day for the Blue Raiders, closing out round two at 4-over par (74-72=146) for the tournament.
Rookie classmates Mattias Varjun and Michael Barnard come in just behind Clements at 5-over par (74-73=147) and 6-over par (73-75=148), respectively.
Senior Tanner Owens, battling illness during rounds one and two, turned in a 10-over par (75-77=152) mark thru 36 holes while sophomore Jake Marvelli, playing as an individual, sits 12-over (80-74=154) at the end of day one.
"We really did not play poorly as a team," Head Coach Mark McEntire said. "We are certainly used to getting some red numbers from Tanner and that did not happen today, but he will be fine.
"This team is going to be really good. We have made some good strides and I am confident we will have a good round tomorrow!"
The Blue Raiders will look to make a move up the leaderboard Tuesday with Owens leading off ahead of Barnard, Varjun, Clements and Saulo.
