Forward averaged 15 points in two wins
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Courtney Whitson has been named Conference USA Freshman of the Week after turning in strong performances in two Lady Raiders wins last week.
Whitson registered back-to-back double-figure scoring games for the first time in her collegiate career to help the Lady Raiders to their first C-USA weekend sweep.
Whitson averaged 15 points and 3.5 rebounds in the two wins, while shooting a sizzling 53 percent (8-of-15) from 3-point range.
The Kingsport, Tenn., native was instrumental in Middle Tennessee's win against Florida Atlantic as she poured in a career-high 19 points on the strength of five 3-pointers, also a career high, in just 21 minutes of action.
Whitson was clutch when it mattered most against Florida Atlantic. The Lady Raiders held a slim 51-48 lead entering the final quarter when Whitson went 4-for-4 from the field, 3-of-3 from 3-point range to create separation from Florida Atlantic.
The freshman forward finished the game against Florida Atlantic shooting 6-of-10 from the field, including 5-of-8 from 3-point range.
Whitson came back strong against FIU with 11 points on the strength of three 3-pointers.
Whitson has started every game for the Lady Raiders and is averaging 7.6 points and 5.7 rebounds per game. She has scored eight or more in eight games, including five double-figure scoring games. She has five or more rebounds in 10 games, including a career-high 14 against Tennessee Tech.
Conference USA Player of the Week and Freshman of the Week are chosen by a vote of the league's 14 communications directors. All C-USA weekly awards are presented by Top of the World.
