MURFREESBORO, TN – The Middle Tennessee men's tennis team is set to begin the 2020-21 fall season by hosting the prestigious Dale Short Shootout at the Adams Tennis Complex this weekend.
In their first of three scheduled events for the fall semester, MT will have 10 players represented in the opening event, which begins on Friday at 10 a.m. with doubles, followed by singles afterwards. Competition Saturday and Sunday will have the same schedule.
Head Coach Jimmy Borendame anticipated graduating three outstanding seniors for the third straight season following the spring 2020 season; however, the shortened season resulted in an additional year of eligibility. Tom Moonen and Max Rauch opted to return for the 2020-21 campaign as graduate students.
Moonen has entered his name into the Blue Raider all-time greats. He sits at the No. 10 spot in combined wins with 142. Rauch entered the ITA singles rankings for the first time in his career at No. 121 (Feb. 5) during the spring.
Middle Tennessee landed the conference Player of the Year for the first time since 1998 last spring when rising senior Chris Edge earned the honor. Edge picked up three conference accolades and posted the most wins among Blue Raiders in dual match singles with an 11-4 mark.
Juniors Pavel Motl, Sean Presson, Francisco Rocha and Stijn Slump will return for their third year. The junior class has a combined 198 singles wins and 101 doubles wins. Motl and Slump were named C-USA All-Conference USA Second-Team Doubles after securing the ITA Ohio Valley Regional and qualified for the Oracle ITA Fall National Championship in 2019.
Troy transfer Oskar Michalek will make his debut for the Blue Raiders in the Dale Short Shootout. Michalek earned Second-Team All-Sun Belt singles honors in 2019, and earned a ITA singles ranking of 125 on March 3, 2020. He became the first Trojan since Feb. 10, 2016 to earn a national ITA ranking. He had the most overall singles wins in the Sun Belt with 21.
The Raiders will face Chattanooga on Friday, Troy on Saturday and ETSU on Sunday. All fans are welcomed to attend but will be required to wear a mask at all times and social distance while spectating each court.
