Raiders pick up five wins
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Junior Francisco Rocha's 10th singles victory of the Fall season—a win which upended the No. 89-ranked Florian Broska, for his second ranked win of the weekend—highlighted an up-and-down day for Middle Tennessee at day two of the Volunteer Showdown.
MT grabbed one win in four doubles matches against duos from Mississippi State. The combo of juniors, Pavel Motl and Stijn Slump edged out the No. 43 ranked duo of Broska/Ocana (6-4).
Led by Rocha, the Raiders split the eight singles matches to for a combined five wins on the day. Juniors Rocha and Slump kept it rolling from this morning. Rocha grinded out a three-set battle with Broska (6-1, 2-6, 7-5) followed up by Slump taking down Davide Tortora in another three-setter (7-5, 4-6, 6-4).
Graduate student Oskar Michalek defeated Ocana in straight-sets fashion. Sean Presson recovered from his morning tight 7-6(5) defeat with another battle in three sets to win in the afternoon against Tennessee's Josh Raab, 7-6(4), 2-6, 1-0(4) to close day two in Knoxville.
The third and final day of the Volunteer Showdown resumes tomorrow afternnon, with the Raiders taking on host Tennessee in session two, with doubles play slated to start at 1 p.m. CT.
