Comeback attempt falls short

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Middle Tennessee women's tennis team comeback attempt fell short as Ball State takes the win 4-3 on Saturday at the Adams Tennis Complex.
Ball State struck first in doubles play to claim the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and 3 doubles.
In singles, the Blue Raiders bounced back by earning a straight set win over Herrington at No. 3 to tie the match, 1-1.
The Blue Raiders retook the lead with freshman Muskan Gupta dominating on court 6 to down Emily Desai 6-4, 6-3 to advance the Raiders lead to 2-1 over the Cardinals.
Ball State quickly responded to collect two singles wins over the Raiders.
Junior Zani Barnard fell at No. 1 to Jessica Braun after a close battle 6-4, 6-3 followed by Marta Herrero Peris slipping 6-3, 6-4, to Kaplan to put the Cardinals in the lead 3-2.
At No. 2, junior Lee Barnard stepped up to tie the match by outlasting Emma Peeler 4-6, 6-2, 6-4.
With the match on the line, Noelle Mauro fought hard against but Lukacs took the first set 6-4.
In the second set, Mauro bounced back to force a third with a 7-5 win. In the final set, Mauro came up short to Lukacs 6-4.
The Blue Raiders will return to action Feb. 7 to take on Furman in Greenville, South Carolina.
