MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — After a dominant first week at the plate in her senior season, Middle Tennessee's Lexi Cushing has earned her second career Tennessee Sports Writers Association Player of the Week honor, the TSWA announced Tuesday.
The Flower Mound, Texas native batted .556 (10-for-18) from the plate with three home runs — all leadoff homers. Cushing earned a hit in all six of MT's games this weekend in the Titan Classic, including a 3-for-3 performance against San Jose State, who entered the year receiving votes in the USA Today/NFCA Coaches poll.
Already MT's all-time home runs leader, Cushing slugged career homer No. 37 on Sunday against Pacific in the weekend finale. In addition to the display of power over the weekend, Cushing singled seven times and drew a walk on three occasions.
The first baseman also scored eight times in the opening weekend, the most of any player in Conference USA.
Tuesday's TSWA weekly honor is Cushing's second of her career and Middle Tennessee's first since Jocelynn De La Cruz was named Player of the Week on Feb. 25, 2018 and Cori Jennings was named Pitcher of the Week on April 24, 2018. All seven TSWA weekly honors in program history have come in the Jeff Breeden era.
Cushing and the Blue Raiders now turn their attention to Madeira Beach Tournament 1, where they'll play five games before returning to Murfreesboro for the home opener against Kentucky on February 19.
