Softball splits first Madeira Beach doubleheader
2/14/2020 2:55:00 PM | Softball
MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. — Another tournament doubleheader included a brilliant pitching performance by a Blue Raider, but Middle Tennessee's softball team finished with a split in the first day of the Madeira Beach Tournament.
MIDDLE TENNESSEE 3, SOUTHERN ILLINOIS 1
» Fighting off sickness, Amber Baldwin gave up only two hits in her second complete game of the season, picking up the win over Southern Illinois.
» Lexi Cushing opened the scoring in the second inning with her fourth homer of the season.
» The Blue Raiders added more insurance in the sixth inning on a Jocelynn De La Cruz two-run home run, which scored Keely McGee.
» Southern Illinois fought back in the seventh inning with a leadoff home run, but nothing else came across for the Salukis, ending MT's first game of the day.
» Savannah Freeman stole the 20th base of her young career against the Salukis.
MIDDLE TENNESSEE 0, CENTRAL ARKANSAS 3
» Central Arkansas entered Saturday's game against the Blue Raiders having lost one-run games to two ranked opponents this season and already with a win over a Conference USA school - Louisiana Tech.
» The Bears struck first in the second inning with a single down the left field line, but pitcher Mia Marinakis limited the damage to one run in the inning.
» UCA scored again in the third and the fifth to make it a 3-0 score, which held through the seventh.
» Claire Smith singled in the bottom of the seventh in a rally attempt, but the Bears closed out the game and took the win.
QUOTES FROM THE BLUE RAIDERS
» Head Coach Jeff Breeden on Amber Baldwin's pitching against Southern Illinois: "[Amber]'s back to where she was, maybe even better. She's fighting a little bit of an illness right now too; she said she felt better towards the end of the game than she did at the beginning. Our kids believe in her, and I believe in her."
» Coach Breeden on Keely McGee's performance early in her senior season: "Keely's going to continue doing a great job for us. We've got five outfielders that can play, and offensively, Keely can give us some power whereas Sydney [Heath] provides more of a short game."
» Outfielder Keely McGee on her approach at the plate when she broke up UCA's perfect game: "I was telling myself to be aggressive early. The last at bat I was late, so I was looking for my pitch early."
