MT downs Nicholls State, falls to Butler

MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. — On a day that was littered with Blue Raider home runs, Middle Tennessee moved to 5-5 on the season with a second doubleheader split at Madeira Beach.
MIDDLE TENNESSEE 11, NICHOLLS STATE 2
» A season ago, Nicholls State was the runner-up in the Southland Conference and entered the day with a win over Purdue and a loss in eight innings to Butler.
» After being shut out in the second game yesterday, MT's batters answered the bell against Nicholls State to open Saturday's doubleheader, scoring 11 runs on 14 hits.
» Both teams left the bases loaded in the first inning, but Keely McGee made the Colonels pay in the second inning with a single to score Kaylee Richetto, who made her first career start, and Lani Rodriguez.
» Nicholls State then led off its half of the inning with a home run to cut the MT lead in half.
» Rodriguez answered in the third inning with her first career home run, which scored three Blue Raider runs.
» The Colonels led off their fourth inning turn with a home run.
» MT closed out the game in the sixth inning with six runs scored, including Richetto's first career homer and Rodriguez's second of the game.
» Corrina Dodd earned her first win of the season, and Gretchen Mead was credited with her first career save.

» The scoring started early, with Butler getting three runs in the first half-inning of the game.
» MT matched Butler's offensive output in its half of the first inning, as Jocelynn De La Cruz scored Keely McGee on a sacrifice fly, followed by a two-run homer by Lexi Cushing.
» The scoring then stalled for five innings, as Kailey Ahlstrom was stuck in a pitcher's duel with the Bulldogs.
» Butler then scored on a two-run homer to take the lead in the seventh inning, leaving MT down to its final three outs.
» The Blue Raiders managed to load up the bases with two outs before being retired for the final time, ending the game and giving Butler its seventh win of the season.
