MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — Once again, early walks and long innings came back to haunt, as Middle Tennessee (5-7) battled with No. 13 Kentucky (8-2) for most of the game but dropped a 9-0 decision in the 2020 home opener.
MIDDLE TENNESSEE 0, NO. 13 KENTUCKY 9
» Fresh off of an NCAA Super Regional appearance last season, Kentucky has picked up where it left off this season, as the Wildcats have flirted with the top 10 mark in the national polls all season.
» The first inning came and went quickly, as both pitchers went through their first turn in the circle without giving up a hit.
» Kentucky got on the board first with four runs in the second inning to put some separation on the scoreboard.
» Lexi Cushing got the first Blue Raider hit in the second inning, a single through the left side of the infield, but a double play ended MT's chance to get on the board in the second.
» After two scoreless innings for both teams, Kentucky led off the fifth inning with a homer to centerfield, making it 5-0.
» The final four runs were scored by the Wildcats in the sixth inning to put the run-rule in effect.
» MT mounted a comeback attempt in the sixth with a Summer Burgess walk and singles by Sydney Heath and Kelci Hill, but Kentucky's Meghan Schorman struck out the final Blue Raider batter to end the game.
QUOTES FROM THE BLUE RAIDERS
» Head Coach Jeff Breeden on having the No. 13 ranked team in the country visit MT for a game: "It's a good thing for our athletic department. It shows that our program has grown from what it was for them to come here and play us. We hope that this will be an annual thing as our seating gets better next year."
» Breeden on Wednesday's game against Kentucky: "We made some adjustments at the plate. We're showing a little bit of maturity for the first time in several years of making some adjustments at the plate. Our kids are listening and doing what we ask them to do. Kelci Hill is a player, and she got a big hit for us. Kentucky's a good team. I don't like getting run-ruled at all, but I think we had some positives come out of this game."
» Third baseman Jocelynn De La Cruz on playing a top-25 team at home: "I think it's awesome. In previous years, we've always gone away to the big schools to see their stadium, and now they got to come to us. We get to have that experience of a top-25 school coming here, and it shows that we can play with them and that we are good enough to play with them."
» De La Cruz on her approach to Wednesday night's game: "I was just trying to treat it like another game. They're top-25, so what - we're a good team as well. I was just trying to be calm and treat it like any other game."
